One of the things that you should be aware of when it comes to your own home is a gas leak because you don’t want to end up on the wrong side of it.

Aside from the fact that gas is flammable and combustible, there are plenty of side effects associated with high levels of gas in the air.

If you live in an apartment building where you don’t have control over the entire building’s gas, you may be wondering if you are at risk of a gas leak as well. So, can a gas leak happen in an apartment?

Gas leaks can happen in an apartment building because of how the gas is interconnected between one unit and the next through a series of various pipes. This can be seen when there are broken pipes or if you smell something rotten in the apartment building.

It is never an overstatement to say that gas leaks in an apartment are very dangerous because of how there are plenty of hazards related to gas leaks.

Gas leaks are probably more dangerous in an apartment due to how the different units are interconnected in one building. This is why it is important that you know the early signs of a gas leak so that you can quickly remedy the situation before it goes out of hand.

Can Gas Leaks Happen In An Apartment?

If you are too late in detecting the leak, the effects can be catastrophic in a way that you might end up losing your home or even find yourself in the hospital.

Apartments are situated in shared buildings where the utilities are shared in the sense that they are interconnected in an entire system in the building. So, with that said, can gas leaks happen in an apartment?

Gas leaks can indeed happen in an apartment just as probably as they could happen in any house. The fact that gas circulates through a system of pipes in an apartment building makes it even more probably for a leak to happen.

The gas and other utilities in an apartment are all connected to each apartment unit in a system of different pipes. When you look at the system, you will understand that you will only be in control of the gas that’s in your own apartment unit. As such, you can’t do anything about the gas in the other units or even in the shared spaces in the entire apartment.

Due to how there are plenty of different pipes snaking their way through the walls, ceilings, and floors of an entire apartment building, the chances of one of those pipes breaking is a possibility. This pipe could be in your own unit or in another unit but the fact of the matter is that, when the pipe breaks, a gas leak can happen.

You may be watching your appliances carefully and you may be very careful in how you take care of your unit but a careless neighbor who leaves the gas out or isn’t as careful with the way he handles his unit can also harm you. So, if one unit is in danger due to a gas leak, the others may soon follow.

How To Tell If There Is A Gas Leak In Your Apartment Building?

It is very important for you to be able to know how to detect whether or not there is a gas leak that is happening in the apartment building.

Even if the leak isn’t in your own unit, you might be able to detect it in other ways. This is why we have come up with a list of things that may be able to help you detect whether or not gas is leaking in your apartment.

Rotten Smell

Normally, natural gas is actually odorless, and this could be a problem because you won’t be able to easily detect a gas leak when it happens. But the good thing is that competent gas companies actually combine their gas with substances that will allow them to have a distinct scent. So, if you smell something rotten in your building, there could be a chance that it is related to a gas leak.

Damaged Pipes

There will be some buildings where the pipes are exposed such that you can actually see the pipes snaking through the walls of the building. So, if you notice that some of these pipes appear to have cracks or damages, then you should be alarmed because there could be a gas leak.

Hissing Sound

Gas that is escaping from pipes should be producing a hissing sound that is quite noticeable. The reason why the gas is making this sound is due to how pressurized the pipes are and that, when the gas escapes, the pressure that’s release produces that distinct hissing sound. And larger leaks can even produce louder sounds.

What To Do When There Is A Gas Leak In Your Apartment

Now what you know how to detect a gas leak in your apartment, let’s look at the different things that you could actually do when you notice that there is a gas leak in your building:

  • Turn off anything that can produce flames. This includes your gas range and your oven. Any device that could create a spark should also be turned off due to how the smallest spark can potentially cause a huge fire when the spark ignites the gas.
  • Tell the custodian or whoever is in charge to shut the entire building’s main gas line until the gas has exited the entire building and when the leak has been dealt with.
  • If the gas leak has become quite serious to the point that you could actually smell it throughout the entire building, tell everyone to evacuate until the situation has been fixed.
  • Call the gas company and emergency services so that the situation can be dealt with immediately. Fixing a leak isn’t something that you can do on your own, and that is why it is important to leave the situation to the professionals.
